Who’s ready to defend democracy? In 1860, men and women across America took to parlors, town squares, and street corners. They called themselves the Wide-Awakes, and they marched, chanted, and sang to prove that democracy was worth fighting for, to end the domination of their country by pro-slavery interests, and to elect Abraham Lincoln president. They risked everything, and in doing so changed the course of history. In this hour-long program, the Cropper Lads bring to life a moment when Americans, facing uncertainty, cynicism and violence, fought for a hopeful future.
